The opaque characteristic of gouache is achieved through a pigment that is coarser than that used in watercolors, combined with added white pigment. The binder in gouache paints is gum arabic.

These high-quality gouaches can also be used as calligraphy inks: dilute the gouache with water to the consistency of “milk coffee” and use it like inks. If you plan to save the diluted gouache for later use, use distilled water to prevent the color from spoiling.
