The information about Gamblin’s white and black oil paints:
Whites:
- Radiant White: Brightest, purest white, opaque. Dries slowest among Gamblin’s whites; thin layers take about five days to dry. The softest and most easily handled white. Coverage 10/10. Composed of safflower oil and titanium dioxide (PW:6).
- Titanium White: Strongest, opaque white, dries relatively quickly. Thick, powerful consistency. Composed of titanium dioxide (PW:6) and linseed oil. Coverage 10/10. For an even whiter white, use Radiant White made with safflower oil. For thin white layers, use Zinc White.
- Titanium Zinck White: Neutral in tone, versatile among whites. Similar, strong composition to titanium white but with a more subtle strength in mixes. Dries relatively slowly. Coverage 7/10. Composed of safflower oil, titanium dioxide (PW:6), and zinc oxide (PW:4) (zinc oxide less than 15%).
- Zinc White: Most translucent white, excellent for thin white glazes to alter light or mood without affecting lower layers too much. Soft in consistency, easy to work with, and dries relatively slowly. Coverage 2/10. Composed of linseed oil and zinc oxide. Gamblin recommends using zinc white in mixes up to 15% and does not recommend using it extensively on flexible surfaces (e.g., canvas). For a safer alternative on flexible surfaces, Titanium Zinc White is recommended. For intense white, use Titanium White or Radiant White.
- Flake White Replacement: Similar properties to traditional Flake White but without lead. Dries quickly, relatively opaque, slightly warm in tone, and stiff in consistency. Coverage 6/10. Composed of linseed oil and titanium dioxide (PW:6).
- Quick Dry White: Dries faster than other whites. Similar working properties to titanium white but dries a day or two faster, opaque. Thick, powerful consistency. Coverage 7/10. Composed of linseed oil and titanium dioxide (PW:6).
- Warm White and Cool White: Pre-mixed whites for perfect blends depending on the warmth or coolness of light. Warm White has a perfect balance of zinc white, yellow, and orange pigments for mixing warm light colors, like those in sunrise or sunset. Cool White has a perfect balance of blue and zinc/titanium white for easy mixing of colors in cool light.
Blacks:
- Ivory Black: Good all-around black, a reliable choice for grays and mixes. Semi-translucent, slightly warm tone. Composed of linseed oil and bone black (PBk9).
- Mars Black: Cool and intense on its own but slightly warm when mixed with white. The mattest of blacks, dries a bit slower, and is much more staining than Ivory Black. Extremely opaque. Can be overwhelming in mixes, but convenient when a direct, intense black is desired. Composed of linseed oil and synthetic iron oxide (PBk11).
- Chromatic Black: A translucent black mixed from complementary colors. Subtler in mixes than other blacks and maintains translucency when mixed with other translucent colors. Composed of phthalo green and quinacridone red (PG36, PV19).
- Black Spinel: The most durable black, completely neutral on its own or when mixed with white. Dries to a matte finish without additives. Long and stringy consistency. Composed of linseed oil and black pigment PBk 28.
